Weekly Quote: True Charity by William George Jordan

“True charity is not typified by an almsbox. The benevolence of a checkbook does not meet all the wants of humanity. Giving food, clothing, and money to the poor is only the beginning, the kindergarten class, of real charity.

“Charity has higher, purer forms of manifestation. Charity is but an instinctive reaching out for justice in life.

“Charity seeks to smooth down the rough places of living, to bridge the chasms of human sin and folly, to feed the heart-hungry, to give strength to the struggling, to be tender with human weakness.” -William George Jordan

  1. This is beautiful and one of my life purposes – to be charitable. A friend shared this on charity just a few days ago. “Charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge. Charity is accepting someone’s differences and even shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down, or resisting to be offended when someone doesn’t handle things the way we had hoped!”

It is the ultimate gift to give in my opinion.

  2. I once heard someone say that true charity is only successful when the one recieving the charity can become independent of it one day.

  3. For me, the thought from W.G. Jordan is eerily timely, ie. extremely arresting and thought provoking.
It is a challenge for me to act in mercy, grace and compassion…to pull the materially needy and the soul hungry close to my heart and…just love, let affection flow from me to them, pouring Gracious Forgiveness either personally, or priestly apart and above from any emotion on my part. And yet…yet it is in those times where I come closest to ascendant transformation, and realize the purpose of my own existence.

  4. This guy was amazing. I can’t believe he is not better known. I have been expanding on his works in my blog and would love for you to stop by if the quotes above touched something in you!
