How to Reach the Moon
By Carl Woolston
Why do some people seem to reach the moon, while others stay trapped in the pit of mediocrity?
How can we break the gravitational pull of mediocrity?
We start by understanding the relationship between habits, vision, and outcomes.
Success is like going to the moon. The ship (you) needs two main things in order to reach that destination: 1) a guidance system, and 2) fuel.
The guidance system is your vision for your life. It is your destination and direction. It is what you want to be when you grow up — and the more specific the better.
It helps you to make the seemingly insignificant but vital course corrections you’re required to make every day.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you determine your vision for your life:
- How much income do I want to earn?
- What type of person do I want to become?
- What type of spouse and parent do I want to be?
- What do I want my relationships to be like?
- How do I want to feel physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually?
- How do I want to spend my time on a daily basis?
Vision is often underrated — but never by those who have achieved greatness.
Get specific on your vision. You can always change those specifics, but the decision itself will put you in motion.
The second component to going to the moon is the fuel system. Fuel gives you lift off and momentum. Fuel is the daily habits that move you forward.
To determine your habits, take specific parts of your vision and ask questions to break down the vision into specific habits.
For example, suppose I decided I wanted to increase my income by 50% this year. Here are additional questions I would ask:
- What can I do to increase my income?
- What skills can I develop to create more value for others?
- What books and industry leads can I learn from?
- How can I increase my circle of influence?
Suppose that I said to myself that the best thing I can do to increase my income is to become better at sales. Here are some habits I could implement.
- Spend 30 minutes each day reading and learning about sales. This would help me complete one book approximately every two weeks.
- Find three online blogs about sales and read them daily.
- Learn all I can from my up-line about selling Max and how they do it.
Success isn’t like some distant galaxy that we’ll never reach. It’s about the correct knowledge and understanding of how to get there.
Then, it’s about internalizing your specific vision and developing the daily habits to fuel your dreams.

Most people truly do underestimate the power of a vision. It give you directions. The second part of this post is about the Slight Edge concept… once you set a destination and pick a direction, take steps on a daily basis, and eventually you will get there. Without this combination, you will stand still or go in circles, or get lost like most people do.
It is imperative to set a destination (your vision), find directions (your plan), and take steps every day (apply the Slight Edge).
I recently wrote a few posts about this on my own blog.
